Traditional Braces

Traditional Braces

Traditional braces straighten the teeth and correct bite issues. At Knoxville Orthodontics, traditional braces are the most common orthodontic treatment we provide for patients. They consist of metal brackets and wires connected with a bracket-to-bracket or bracket-to-wire system. The wires are held in place with elastic ligatures. Traditional braces are adjusted monthly, and treatment generally lasts about two years.

Traditional braces are ideal for patients of all ages who need their teeth straightened and aligned. They work by applying consistent pressure to the teeth so that they will shift into place over time. This movement can be adjusted and changed as needed for the best results.

The Process of Getting Traditional Braces

Knoxville Orthodontics

The first step is a consultation with our orthodontist, who will evaluate your teeth and bite to determine if braces are needed and create a customized treatment plan. Once a treatment plan is in place, the orthodontist will prepare the teeth by cleaning them and applying a bonding agent to attach the brackets. The brackets are attached to the teeth using a special adhesive. Next, a wire is threaded through the brackets, which will be held in place by small elastic bands. The wire is tightened regularly to shift the teeth into the desired position gradually.

Patients must visit the orthodontist regularly for adjustments and care throughout treatment to ensure the braces are working effectively. Once treatment is complete, the brackets and wires are removed, and a retainer may be worn to maintain the new position of the teeth.

How Do I Care For My Traditional Braces?

Knoxville Orthodontics

We recommend patients brush their teeth at least twice a day, preferably after every meal and snack. Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste to clean all surfaces of your teeth, including around the brackets and wires. Take your time and be thorough to ensure that all food particles and plaque are removed.

Flossing is just as important as brushing when you have braces. Use a floss threader or special orthodontic floss to clean between the wires and your teeth. Be sure to floss at least once a day, preferably before bedtime.

We also recommend patients keep up with their regular dental checkups and cleanings. In addition, we recommend avoiding certain problematic foods that may damage the braces, such as gum, popcorn kernels, and hard candy. You should also avoid sticky or chewy candies that get stuck in your brackets and cause cavities.
